Staples invented the office superstore concept when it opened its first store in Brighton, MA on May 1, 1986. Today, Staples is the world's largest office supply chain with 1,846 stores in North America and 282 stores in Europe.
The company provides products, services and expertise in office supplies, copy & print, technology, facilities and breakroom, and furniture.
The company reported 2013 sales of $23.1 billion, a 5.2% decline, and net income of $620 million. For the full year 2013, North American Stores and Online achieved sales of $11.1 billion, a decrease of 6.1 percent compared to 2012.
Staples said it plans to close 225 stores by 2015. The company closed 40 stores net and downsized 40 locations in 2013.
Each Staples store stocks about 7,000-8,000 products and 2,400 are Staples brands. More than 500,000 products are offered online now, up from 100,000 a year ago.
Staples plans to create new categories in stores in 2014 to help small business. It will refresh nearly 20 percent of its products, adding about 1,600 items in categories beyond office supplies. At the same time the company will remove about 1,000 items, creating an assortment of office supply essentials.
The eight new categories include: facilities and breakroom supplies, maintenance repair and operations items; mail and ship expanded assortment, retail supplies for small businesses; storage solutions; gifts and cards for office parties; organizational accessories from Poppin brand; and early education toys and learning aids. The items were added after extensive customer tests over the past year.
"A year ago, we announced a plan to fundamentally reinvent our company," said Ron Sargent, Staples' chairman and chief executive officer. "With nearly half of our sales generated online today, we're meeting the changing needs of business customers and taking aggressive action to reduce costs and improve efficiency."
