Massachusetts Institute of Technology is
one of the nation's top universities. Founded in 1865, it is
an independent, co-ed university with 34 academic departments
and divisions focusing on science and technology.
MIT is located on 168 acres that extend
more than a mile along the Cambridge side of the Charles River
Basin.
The university had 4,172 undergraduate
students and 6,048 graduate students enrolled in fall 2007. Women
made up 44.5% of undergrads and 30% of grad students.
MIT is one of the most competitive schools
to attend in the country. Just 12.5% of applicants were accepted
in 2007.
MIT has 1,008 faculty members including
635 full professors. Of this number, 195 are women and 172 are
minorities. 71 current and former members of MIT have won the
Nobel Prize.
Tuition for undergraduate students is $34,750
for the 2007-08 school year. Room and board is an additional
$10,400 plus $2,800 for books and personal expenses.
