Founded in 1811, Massachusetts General
Hospital is the third oldest hospital in the country and oldest
and largest hospital in New England.
An affiliate of Harvard University's Medical School, MGH serves 47,000 patients a year and conducts 1.5 million visits from the main campus and at its four health centers, in the North End, Charlestown, Chelsea and Revere. The emergency department records 83,000 visits per year. It has 907 available beds and an average 82% occupancy rate. MGH is consistently ranked among the five best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
The MGH conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the U.S, with an annual research budget of about $550 million, that spans more than 20 clinical departments and centers across the hospital. This funding drives discoveries and breakthroughs in basic and clinical research, which translate into new and better treatments that transform medical practice and patient care. It is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and nearly all of the hospital's active staff physicians are on the Harvard Medical School faculty.
In addition to its size, MGH is also the
largest private employer in the city of Boston, boasting over
19,000 employees among its campuses. A commitment to providing
the best possible care for all of MGH's patients inspires the
commitment of every MGH division, from the most hands-on healthcare
positions to the administrative realm. MGH works hard to promote
diversity in the workplace, offering support through employee
groups, education and development and programs for women and
minorities.
In March 1994, the MGH joined with Brigham
and Women's Hospital to form Partners HealthCare System, Inc.,
an affiliation established to create an integrated health care
delivery system providing excellent, cost-effective care while
maintaining the hospital's historic dedication to teaching and
research. In addition to the founding institutions, Partners
HealthCare System now includes McLean Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation
Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
and Faulkner Hospital.
Numerous employment opportunities are available
in every segment of MGH's operation including internships, volunteer
opportunities, physician's openings and administrative staff.
MGH employs 4,300 nurses.
