The Boston Beer Company brews more than 50 styles of beer primarily under the name Samuel Adams. The Company uses the traditional four vessel brewing process and often takes extra steps like dry-hopping and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. It passionately pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of its classic beers by constantly searching for the world's finest ingredients.

While resurrecting traditional brewing methods, the Company has earned a reputation as a pioneer in another revolution, the "extreme beer" movement, where it seeks to challenge drinkers' perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company strives to elevate the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions the world over, and in the past five years it has won more awards in international beer competitions than any other brewery in the world.

The Company remains independent, and brewing quality beer remains its single focus. While the Company is the country's largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for only about nine-tenths of one percent of the U.S. beer market.

In 2012, net revenues increased 13% to $580.2 million and net income of $59.4 millon. The ocmpany shippped 2.72 million barrels of beer in 2012, a 10% increase.

History

The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father's attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars in Boston with the belief that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. That beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager, named after the Revolutionary War hero from Boston.

Samuel Adams made its debut in Boston on Patriot's Day in April 1985. After brewing the beer in small batches and keeping an obsessive eye on quality and flavor, Jim carried bottles bar-to-bar. Bartenders thought the beer was unlike any other they'd tasted in freshness and flavor. The beer caught on, and Jim built the business outward from those first accounts. By the end of the year, sales reached 500 barrels, and distribution expanded across Massachusetts, into Connecticut, and a place where great beer is revered, West Germany. Six weeks after its introduction, Samuel Adams was selected as "The Best Beer in America" in The Great American Beer Festival's Consumer Preference Poll an award it went on to win an unprecedented four times.

Since 2000, Samuel Adams has won more awards in international beer tasting competitions than any other brewery in the world.

The company went public in 1995.
